I left my heart, in NST...
Actually, I didn't. But here I am in KL down south, and I miss some things. Like mates, cheap (price/quality) beer, and the lawless freedom of the place. Still, my new job's medical just paid in full for my wife's caesarean birth at a luxury hospital. Don't think I'd have got that in NST. Good army hosipital there, though.
KL is okay, miles better than Bkk, but still a city. Not in the same league as NST town, but at least the flix are in English and no standing is necessary before it starts. I was never a Patpong prowler ('cept when certain visitors came to see me in Bkk form NST - you know who you are) so KL vs Bkk for that, no idea (though I bet Siam would win that one...).
Keystone kops are pricier to bribe than the Siamese, though no direct experience of that (yet). Lots more red light jumpers at junctions, though no red shirts or any other coloured folks. THe pavements are much better than NST's, but the roads are full of holes (oaky-ish for cars, but not so good for 2-wheelers).
Food's a bit pricier, though more choice (Chinese, Indian, Malay, western), and 7/11 sells booze 24/7.
Will probably be visiting next week for a coupla days, as Siam is still cheaper for hotels and such, and you can't beat Krabi/NST for sheer natural beauty.
Any questions, go ahead and ask. I may not know the answers, but I'll offer my opinion!

Re: I left my heart, in NST...
Hello Mr Norris. Hope things are going well for you down in KL and thanks for the little write up on the place.
I've always had a love/hate relationship with KL having first gone there over 30 years ago. Back then the CBD basically didn't exist as you know it today, Batu Cave was in the middle of nowhere and the now over-priced Hard Rock Cafe sat by itself surrounded by greenery. Having said that, I like Malaysia, the people and KL is or seems much cleaner than it's counterpart this side of the border.
Given the choice though, I'd have to stay here as lawlessness does have its benefits!
Call in next time you're up ..... and not at 11pm! :0)

silly question maybe but since i love to eat pork, have you found that yet?
I have loved KL since the first day i went there, and it is on the list of one of the places i want to live and work before i die... Any suggestions? Can i mop the floor in a school? Any jobs for me?

Norris where are you working? Any chance of a tip for getting work there? i have looked online but it isn't as simple as getting work in Thailand!! As you know my husband is there and we are doing the immigration thing at the moment but Australia takes their sweet time with approvals and we have a number of things going against us for his visa so thought working in KL so we can be together while we wait might be a good idea.....what you think? Can you help?

Re: I left my heart, in NST...
I got me a job with the British Council, and in comparison with the Bangkok office, they seem to employ folks from a lot more countries. For example, in the big durian it was basically just mainland Britons, whilst here in KL they employ Burmese, US, Canadians, S Africans, Australians, Kiwis, and Malays as teachers. Seems like anybody from an old colony or commonwealth country can apply, so have a look at their website and see what's available. The centre's growing constantly, so new teachers are starting all the time (20 last year, 3 others with me in Jan, and 2-4 since then!), plus other positions. Not saying you'll have it as easy as a Thai school or earn megabux, but if you wanna get a job down here...
Snowy - don't think yours was ever a UK ex, but there are plenty of international schools around, and May doesn't have anywhere like the restrictions for working that Thailand does, so get hunting. There are plenty of jobs for maids, so if Sean can't get you a potboy uniform, there are plenty of lonely housewives down here who could use a dab hand like you (pool cleaner, general handyman...) and with your driving skills, you'd fit right in with the taxi drivers!

Lots of pork in the non-halal sections of most supermarkets, but even the McD's breakfast muffin has small print of chicken being used to make the sausage! Lamb and beef are cheap and plentiful, and much tastier than any in Thailand (if you can find any lamb). 24hr Krappy Frickin Chicken, Masons's Arms, curry joints and so on abound, if that floats your boat. Lots of milky drinks everywhere due to the relative cost of booze. Milky milky!

Re: I left my heart, in NST...
If I give ya the website, this ol' site will get even more bots and stuff homing in on it. Just do a simple google for the BC, follow the link from the webpage and view the jobs. It's dynamic so jobs are updated all the time. You can look by country etc. It's really easy and if you can't find the site, you won't be coping with the job, fnar! I'm not going to do everything for you, but I will gladly be a reference if you want me to be...
