Teacher License Exams
Now, I know the whole idea of us having to do these well thought out and well translated and proof read exams is nothing more than a money cow, but what exactly happens AFTER we have taken the exams?
I waited weeks and weeks AFTER the date they told us they would have our results before they eventually appeared on the Khru Sapar web site (as owned and run by those in command).
The link I had was for the Thai version; it said quite clearly that the pass mark was 60%. Top bannana, I had passed 3 of these "blindfold and a pin" multi-guess tests.
But then, I stumbled on the English version of the same page..... the pass mark was now 75% and I had now only passed 1 of the tests.
See for yourself:
Thai version
Thai + Farang VAT version
Got my boss on the case as she was going to BKK and would be in Khru Sapar. The reply that came back was even more confusing...... "I'm not sure...... maybe you have passed all....... I think there will be more exams next year".
Anyway, if I passed 1 or 3 means nothing either way really as I went in there with no prep and no idea what I was in for. I came out more confused than when I went in, and for some time afterwards I found it difficult to speak English.
Just curious though if anyone ever received any certificates from passing these tests?
They told us 1 month for the results, then 1 month for the certificate. I took the tests in January, yet still no sign of any sparkling certificates.
UPDATE:
It just gets better
I just took a look again and they have posted a news item for the results.
See Here
Check out the date they posted this news flash........ Comedy timing or what?.......... April 1st!
damn, they got us hook line and sinker with that one!

Re: Teacher License Exams
it is just a money making exercise as far as i am concerned... how can anyone pass a test if no one gives you anything to study before a test.. we are not thai so we do not automatically get a pass just for turning up on the test day..

Re: Teacher License Exams
well, sometimes it pays to complain.
I emailed their testing dept on 9th of this month, and a few days ago received my certificate for passing 2 strands (the 1st exam).
They brushed over the comment I made about their being TWO pass marks depending on if you read in Thai or English.
Shame you can't attach bank notes to an email else I'd have a full license by now.

Re: Teacher License Exams
Did my first attempt last January and passed 1 out of 4 of them..... had to make a new application for teacher license as a result it seems.
Maybe they will have got the exams proof read and properly translated this time Goldmember, which might give you at least a fighting chance of passing them. They must know how badly they are written, so do they really see farangs that managed to pass them all as smart teachers or just lucky on the day?
I came close to passing 3 of them, but I know for a fact there was no skill involved, purely pot luck on the day. how can you set an exam on professionalism that is riddled with bad English?????

Re: Teacher License Exams
well thats another 2 years out of the way... it was not easy, as many teachers could not understand the questions asked, or make any sene out of them ... there is a book given to Thai teachers taking this test and the have about 60 questions to answer on each paper .. not like the 150 the farangs have to answer.. mmmmmm ! hopefully some time in the near future there will be a book or some classes set up to help the farangs on this test. because there is no way some of us will know the answer to the thai questions as we think different than the thai people... anyway , i wish all those who sat the tests good luck ad hope you ticked the correct boxes..

Re: Teacher License Exams
Read this on the nation. Couldn't help but thinking its the same people that write the teacher licence exams.
The questions in the Ordinary National Educational Test (ONet) have caused a stir again.
To many Mathayom 6 students, some of the questions on this year's test sounded rather stupid, with none of the multiple-choice answers given seeming to be correct. Some parents felt the questions test neither the knowledge nor the common sense of their children.
"If the question designers come up with such tests, how can we expect to see a bright future for our country?" asked one critic venting his frustration on a Web board.
A total of 397,177 students sat the O-Net tests last weekend, according to National Institute of Educational Testing Service (NIETS) director Samphan Phranphruek. The NIETS organises the O-Net tests; Mathayom 6 students take them seriously because their scores are a factor in the university-admission system.
However, as in years past, this year's examinees emerged from the exam rooms joking about the questions.
This year, O-Net questions for the Health Education subject have drawn criticism.
One of the multiple-choice questions asks, "If you have a sexual urge, what should you do?" The available alternatives are: a) Ask friends if you can play football together; b) Consult family members; c) Try to sleep; d) Go out with a friend of the opposite sex; or e) Invite a close friend to watch a movie together.
Critics pointed out that both "a" and "b" could be taken as correct answers for boys; furthermore, in the case of most girls, "a" would be a strange option, and therefore not a viable choice.
A large number of students also found the following question laughable: "Locals have found a bizarre item. It is round and soft. If it is not fed water, it shrinks and becomes a hard object. This hard object, when given water, will return to its soft, bigger condition. What is it?" The alternatives were: a) The egg of the Naga; b) The egg of a giant salamander; c) Quartz; d) Flour balls in milk tea; or e) Hydrogel.
"I guess this question was just for fun," a student said on condition of anonymity.

Re: Teacher License Exams
I would like to see the boy or girl that walks home to mum or dad, then says "Me so horny, Me so naughty, do you want to play football"???
It must truly be a simple solution for this problem- let all the answers be correct... as all of then could be...

Re: Teacher License Exams
So, if a mattayom student asks you for a game of football, or comes to class and asks if they can watch a movie.............. hold on to your pants!
Mattayom teachers, what would your advice be to students with a sexual urge?
Please don't answer "See me after class!"
Better still, make that one of the interview questions for new teachers, you'd soon weed out the scrap.

Re: Teacher License Exams
She said two questions in |the Health Education section of the Ordinary National Educational Test (O-Net) for Grade 12 students were based on opinions, which would make it difficult to answer. (now you know how the thousands of foreign teachers taking the teacher exams feel!)
Some of the questions offered more than one correct choice, while in some questions, none of the options provided appeared to be correct, a teacher said on condition of anonymity. (same as above)
The questions that have drawn the most criticism are: "What should you do if you feel a sexual urge?" and "What do boyfriends and girlfriends do together according to Thai tradition?" (Maybe one for the culture course)
Apart from these two, many other questions included in this year's test sounded rather stupid, and some parents said that they did not think the queries were testing either their children's knowledge or their common sense. (enough said)
The teacher, who asked not to be named, said these questions were meant to teach students to analyse and think carefully before answering. (yes, then make a wild stab in the dark and hope they gave a big enough tip to the examiner)
However, Utumporn said the answers were unclear.
Shame the same report was not run for the foreign teacher tests

Re: Teacher License Exams
I don't think that I have ever heard that question, but I have told them that I will never lie to them and told them that they can always ask me anything.
I guess I would tell them that these feelings are normal and nothing to be worried about. I would also tell/suggest that they should try to think of something else, like f'ex. go jogging or take a cold shower...
difficult question really, but I think that the person who asked it would be a bit strange... maybe it should be removed from the test????
